Q: What is a Matelasse?

A: A matelasse has the appearance of a quilted fabric but without any padding. Using a French technique, intricate embossed patterns are woven to create a beautiful, sculpted appearance. Usually this term is used when referring to lightweight textured cotton blankets made with this technique. Joanna explains in more detail here:
