We're back with another edition of the Au Lit Book Club! We've rounded up five members of the Au Lit team (and part-time voracious readers) to share with you what's currently on their nightstands. Let us know - what are you reading? Do you have any good recommendations?
"Right now I'm in the middle of reading two books. At the cottage, I picked up Mindy Kaling's "Why Not Me?", and it's great so far! I have really high expectations for it - her last book was such a great read. I love Mindy Kaling - she's so funny and likeable.
I've also been reading "Sharp Edges" by Gillian Flynn, although it's taking me such a long time to get through it. I normally like to read books cover-to-cover in one sitting, so reading it for this long is killing me! I know that she does great twist endings (I loved the conclusion of "Gone Girl"), so I'm hanging in and waiting for the payoff at the end."
"Although I'm not a big book reader, I am a huge fan of magazines! Every night before bed, I like to boil a pot of tea and read my favourites: Martha Stewart Living, HGTV Magazine, Style at Home, House and Home, and Domino (so happy that it's returned!). I'm obsessed with all things DIY and upcycled, and I get tons of inspiration from reading magazines every night."
"There are only two things that I collect in life: shoes and books! I'm trying to re-read the classics, so I recently picked up "Don Quixote" by Miguel Cervantes. It's about a man who is obsessed with the chivalrous ideals of knights and adventure, and decides to take up his lance and sword to destroy the wicked. I haven't gotten very far into it, but I'm really liking it so far - the writing is well constructed, and I love that it's filled with so much fantasy and whimsy. If I could be doing anything right now, I would be reading on a lounge chair on the beach. Since that's not feasible year-round, I usually have to settle for a subway seat on the way to work!"
"I'm a big reader. My commute to and from work is my reading time, and I look forward to it every day. Right now I've got "The Acolyte" by Nick Cutter on the go. It's unreal - it takes place in a dystopian world where one religion prevails, and everything else is illegal. It's crazy and dark and genius.
I spent this summer reading the entire Harry Potter series, and it was completely surreal. I was so excited to wake up every morning just to read it - I can understand why the series is such a worldwide phenomenon!"
"I always have several books on the go at one time, and typically it's a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Right now I'm reading "Circling the Sun" by Paula McLaine. She also wrote "The Paris Wife", which I loved. I haven't been able to get into the book yet - I'm far more interested in a French non-fiction book that I'm reading about orphanages in Quebec in the 1950s. I'm also writer, and it's research for my next book!"
