6 Ways to Declutter Your Bedroom (and Keep it Organized For Good)

Picture this scene in your bedroom... piles of dirty clothes, scattered around everywhere you look. Stacks of unread books, receipts, and loose change piled on the nightstands. Bundles of unread mail heaped on the dresser, littered with odds and ends from pockets. Sound familiar?

Don't worry - you're not alone. The bedroom is one of the easiest places to become breeding grounds for clutter. While a messy bedroom may seem harmless, in fact it could be detrimental to your health - both mental and physical. Psychologists have long associated clutter with anxiety, which can in turn causes sleep issues.

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary; a place that invites peace, relaxation, and rest. We've compiled six easy steps to banishing bedroom clutter forever - leaving your space clean, organized, and the safe haven for sleep that it deserves to be.

1. Give your nightstand a makeover

Nightstands are one of the easiest places for clutter to accumulate in the bedroom. They're the perfect catch-all for items that you're not sure where to put at the moment, and they can easily become a junk-filled eyesore. Hint: when you start to knock things over on the floor at night while reaching for your phone, you have a nightstand clutter problem!

Consider this article your nightstand intervention. First thing's first: it's time to organize this piece for once and for all. To start, completely clear out the interior and exterior of your nightstand, and remove everything but the essentials: current books you're reading, hand cream, reading glasses, lip balm - keeping ONLY the things you need immediate access to before sleep.

After decluttering and removing everything that's not of complete necessity, it's time to start putting things back. We learned one tip from an interior designer that we think is absolutely genius: instead of leaving the top completely bare (aka the perfect blank canvas for clutter to accumulate), instead place a few beautiful, intentional pieces on top. This will discourage leaving random junk in its place. Our go-to nightstand accessories include a small vase of flowers, a chic candle, a luxe hand cream, or a silk sleep mask - all products that look good, and serve a practical purpose.

2. Make your bed (always)

We've said it before, and we'll say it again. The best way to start every morning off right is by making your bed. Not only will giving your pillows and duvet a shake each morning help to circulate the goose down fill (leaving them fluffier, and in better shape), but leaving the bed in a polished state helps you to feel like you've accomplished something. This feeling of success starts your day off right, and promotes a successful mindset for the rest of the day.

In most bedrooms, the bed takes up the single largest visual space. Making your bed is the easiest way to visually transform your bedroom, helping to make it it feel tidy (even if you're still working on banishing clutter). As an extra special touch when you slip into your bed, try spritzing your sheets with our Kismet Day Dreamer Relaxation Spray each morning. This spray will make your bed smell wonderful - and with calming notes of lavender and chamomile, can even help you sleep better at night too.

3. Consider stylish storage

Everyone needs a little extra storage in the bedroom. Whether it's warm blankets for chilly nights, seasonal throw pillows, or additional sleeping pillows, don't let your stuff stack up in random piles around the room. Instead, consider stylish storage options that are both equally functional and fashionable.

If space is at a premium: we always recommend beautiful wicker baskets that complement your bedroom decor - and they're perfect for stashing throws. If you have the space, nothing beats the look of a beautiful tufted ottoman for the foot of the bed (bonus points for one with a lid and storage inside!). Not only is it functional, but solves the problem of where to put your decorative toss cushions at night while you're sleeping!

 4. Clean under the bed (constantly)

Out of sight isn't necessarily out of mind. If you're having difficulties sleeping, there might be an explanation you haven't considered: the amount of clutter that's hiding under your bed. As we've covered before, cluttered spaces equal a cluttered mind. According to classic feng shui principles, clearing the items hiding under your bed allows energy to flow freely around the room, leading to an internal feeling of peace and harmony.

Beyond cluttering your mind, a messy space under your bed could be detrimental to your health. The dust that accumulates on debris under your bed can contribute to allergies, asthma, chest tightness or pain, and shortness of breath. In fact, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America have cited dust mites as being the most common trigger for year-round allergies and asthma.

5. Clear off the chair

We've all seen it before: clothes that have already been worn - but are too clean for the laundry basket or dry cleaner - always end up on the chair. Don't let unsightly wrinkly clothes pile up on the chair in your bedroom.

Instead, we recommend investing in a garment steamer, and steaming your clothes immediately after wearing them, then hanging them back in the closet where they belong. They'll feel as good as new, and by proactively de-wrinkling them you won't have to worry about ironing in a rush when you're struggling to get out the door on time. We love the Rowenta Garment Steamer; it's gentle on clothing but does an amazing job at smoothing out clothes quickly. Plus, it's sleek design allows it to fit nicely in your closet and roll out whenever needed.
