Fall Layering Essentials: How to Make Your Coziest Bed Ever

As the weather cools and the days grow shorter, there’s nothing more inviting than a cozy, layered bed to snuggle into. Fall is the perfect season to experiment with layers, textures, and warmth—transforming your bedroom into a comforting retreat. The key to achieving the ultimate cozy bed lies in layering your bedding in the right way, and in this guide, we’ll walk you through how to do it like a pro using coverlets, throws, and blankets.

1. Start with the Basics: The Perfect Sheet Set

Your foundation is everything when it comes to comfort, and that begins with a quality sheet set. For fall, you may want to opt for a fabric that balances softness and warmth, such as cotton sateen or flannel.

We always recommend sheets crafted from natural fibres, which are naturally temperature-regulating, keeping you warm in the winter but breathable enough to be cooling in the summer. If you're a particularly cold sleeper, now is the time to swap in cozy flannel sheets

For the ultimate fall bed, consider swapping in sheets in neutral or earthy tones for the fall—think soft creams and taupes if you prefer light colours, or charcoal or deep blue if you love deep tones. These colours will create a harmonious base for the layers that follow.

2. Your First Layer: The Duvet Cover

No fall bed is complete without a duvet. Not only does it add a plush, cloud-like layer to your bed, but it’s also a versatile piece that can completely change the look and feel of your space.

For fall, opt for a duvet cover in a cozy fabric like cotton sateen, linen, or even cotton jersey, which will add warmth while maintaining breathability. Consider autumn-inspired tones such as warm taupe, fog blue, or moss green, or classic patterns like stripes, checks, or florals.

A duvet cover makes it easy to switch up your bedroom décor seasonally, and the added layer will help keep you warm on those chilly fall nights. Plus, it’s the perfect canvas for adding decorative pillows and throws to complete your layered look.

3. Your Next Layer: The Coverlet

One element of a beautiful bed that you may be missing? A coverlet (or bed blanket, as it's often known). A coverlet is a lightweight, decorative layer for your bed that can be used on top or underneath your duvet.

Opt for a quilted or textured coverlet in a fabric like matelassé or velvet, which provides warmth without being too heavy. Choose a color that complements your sheets but stands out on its own, such as soft grey, hunter green, or deep navy.

One of our favourite ways to style a coverlet is folded at the foot of the bed. This helps to add visual interest to the bed, and it can be easily pulled up on top of your duvet to keep you warm on chilly fall nights.

4. Style With a Throw

To complete the look, add a throw—the finishing touch that adds extra coziness and warmth. Throws are great for adding a pop of colour or an additional layer of texture to your bed. Choose one in a complementary hue or something that contrasts for a bold statement. Cashmere, baby alpaca, or faux fur throws are perfect for fall, as they offer warmth and softness.

Drape your throw casually over one corner of the bed or fold it neatly at the foot for a more polished look. Throws are also great for adding a seasonal touch, so consider selecting one with autumnal tones or patterns, like burnt orange or deep green, or fall-inspired buffalo checks

5. The Final Touch: Throw Pillows

Layering your bedding isn’t complete without the right accent pillows. Start with your regular sleeping pillows, then add a couple of decorative pillows or Euro shams in front for height and texture.

This is the place where you can let your personality truly shine. For fall, one of our favourite styling tips is to add a mix of different textures and patterns in a complimentary colour palette. Keep it interesting by pairing block prints, cozy knit textures, velvet, wool, plaid flannel, and monogrammed accents - or layer them all together. When it comes to throw pillows, more is more.

Pro Tips for Layering Your Bed This Fall:

  • Mix textures: Don’t be afraid to combine different textures like crisp cotton sheets, a quilted coverlet, and a chunky knit blanket. The variety will add dimension and make your bed look even more inviting.
  • Play with colour: Fall is the perfect season to experiment with deep, rich colours. If you typically stick to neutrals, try adding a pop of rust, forest green, or even mustard yellow through your blankets or throws.
  • Stay functional: While layering adds beauty, it’s also about practicality. Make sure your layers are easy to adjust so you can stay comfortable, whether it’s an unexpectedly warm fall day or a chilly evening.
